Why It Happens

Most tropical houseplants are forest understorey plants, evolved to live under a canopy → hard, direct sun on a south-facing windowsill overwhelms those shade-adapted leaves and the chlorophyll in the leaves bleaches under the load → leaf cells on the light-facing surface dry out and die, so the damage shows up as bleached, papery, or brown patches on the parts of the leaves facing the strongest light; the patches feel papery and crispy and do not fade. Leaf scorch is a non-infectious condition caused by unfavorable environmental situations, not by a disease organism, and sunburn damage on a leaf is permanent — the leaf will not turn green again.
