Core Care Logic

01

How Often to Water

Stick your finger in the top inch of soil. If it feels dry, water thoroughly until it drains from the bottom.

02

Finding the Right Light

Near an east or west window with a sheer curtain. Your hand should cast a soft but defined shadow.

03

Choosing the Right Soil

Mix regular potting soil with about 30% perlite or orchid bark. This keeps water flowing through instead of pooling at the roots.

04

Temperature & Humidity

Comfortable in normal room temperatures, 15–27°C. Nothing special needed. Thrives in high humidity (60–80%). A bathroom or kitchen spot is ideal, or use a humidifier nearby.

05

What to Expect

This is a steady, moderate grower — repot every couple of years and mostly takes care of itself. Just remove the occasional yellow leaf.

What Makes It Special

“

All parts are toxic: sap contains calcium oxalate crystals (raphides) that burn and swell the mouth and throat if ingested and can temporarily paralyze the vocal cords — the origin of the common name 'dumb cane'; the sap is a skin/eye irritant and is toxic to pets, so wear gloves when handling and keep plants out of reach of children and pets. Stories that it is deadly are urban legends; severe harm occurs only with prolonged oral contact.

auto_awesomeThe cultivar 'Camille' has large cream to pale-yellow leaves (to 40 cm long) edged with bright green margins and stays compact at up to 3 ft (0.9 m) tall; it is one of the most recognizable cream-margined Dieffenbachia cultivars and has held the RHS Award of Garden Merit since 2002 ('Camille' and 'Tropic Snow' both AGM).
